The probe started when HSI received a tip in late January that the company was employing immigrants without status, according to the search warrant. A month later, investigators served a notice to Mt. Baker Roofing requiring the business to provide employees’ I-9 forms, a document that verifies someone is legally able to work in the U.S.
The company provided a binder with 84 I-9 forms for current and past employees. The owner of Mt. Baker Roofing told investigators that he doesn’t use E-Verify, a system that allows employers to verify the information submitted in I-9s, because it’s not required and because many of his competitors don’t use it. Out of the 84 forms, 56 instances of a falsified green card were identified.
